Devonport is a thriving NW Tasmanian city situated on the pretty Mersey River 278 km north of Hobart. This important port is known as the ‘Gateway to Tasmania’ as the regular Sydney and Melbourne passenger/vehicle ferries arrive here. It was established in 1890 when two smaller towns on either side of the river (Formby & Torquay) merged. Early timber cutting and boat building have today been replaced by tourism and vegetable growing. The area known as ‘Australia’s market garden’ produces 40% of the state’s vegetable crops. Devonport Cup (Jan), Devonport Triathalon (Feb), Taste of Harvest Festival (Mar), Classic Challenger Motorsport Event (Oct). Tasmanian Arboretum (10 km s) 58 ha parkland of native and exotic species with waterfalls, walking trails, a platypus dam & picnic areas. Braddon’s Lookout (16 km w) spectacular coastal views. Don River Railway, hourly rides to Coles Bay. The Van Diemen Light Railway Society has the largest Tasmanian collection of steam locomotives and passenger carriages on display.
